RALEIGH – The president of the North Carolina NAACP says he will continue what he called "extreme'' protests against the Republican-backed budget bill.
Rev. William Barber took part in a news conference Wednesday, just hours after he was released from jail. Barber and six others were arrested by legislative police for disrupting a state house session Tuesday. They were chanting in the gallery.
Barber says he and his supporters have no intention of toning down opposition to the proposed state budget, which they say cuts funds for education and other programs that help the poor.
"We should see education as an investment not as wasted spending,” said Barber. “We should see human services as an investment, not wasted spending. We should see taking care of the mentally ill as an investment, not wasted spending. For them to describe and categorize education, and Medicare and money to our UNC system as wasted spending is wrong."
House Speaker Thom Tillis says the proposed budget will benefit all North Carolinians. He wants Barber to apologize for Tuesday's disruptions and says is willing to meet with other NAACP members.
