CHARLOTTE – More than 100 Charlotte-Mecklenburg School employees and parents urged county commissioners to show the district the money Wednesday evening.
The newly formed “Meck Future” is urging the county commission to take advantage of growing property values and put much of that money back into the classroom and save jobs.
Meck Future supporters estimate $55 million in additional county funding for CMS would save teacher and teacher assistant jobs and support positions such as librarians. It would also protect class size and saving the pre-kindergarten Bright Beginnings program.
"It's clear that, if we're going to make any progress on the funding situation, it's going to have to happen at the county level,” said Doug Swaim, of Meck Future.
The Mecklenburg County Manager will unveil his proposed budget, which will include the recommended property tax rate, on May 17.
