CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will spend close to $2 million to create more tests for students.

Next year, 52 additional tests will be given in subjects and grade levels that currently do not have formal assessments. The district says the tests will allow them to better measure how much students are learning, chart their growth and determine teacher effectiveness.

Critics say more tests would be a waste of time.

β€œIt does take away from instructional time and it does narrow your curriculum because you are essentially teaching to your test,” said Mary McCray, president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Association of Educators.

The district says the tests will take up a small fraction of student time and won't stifle teacher creativity.
