RALEIGH – Wake County's school board chair is one step closer to being able to vote on all issues.
Tuesday, the State House of Representatives introduced a bill removing a restriction in the state law which only allows Wake's school board chair to vote when it's necessary to break a tie.
“For Wake County [school] board members, each member represents an individual district,” explained Wake County Republican Rep. Nelson Dollar, who sponsored the bill. “The citizens in the district of the chair ought to have the same say on the board as any other member.”
Current School Board Chair Ron Margiotta, who is also a Republican, agrees.
“You have a responsibility to the people who elected you to let them know your position and I think it's as simple as that,” he said.
But former school board chair, now Wake County Democratic Representative Rosa Gill isn't convinced.
“When you have the [board] majority already deciding the outcome of an issue, I don't know there's a need for a chairman to vote, just to vote,” she said.
But with Republicans controlling the General Assembly and the Wake County School Board, the bill has a strong chance of passing.
The House referred the bill to committee.
