CHARLOTTE – Superintendent Peter Gorman said Wednesday that layoff notices will be distributed next month to hundreds of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools employees.

In all, the district is planning to eliminate more than 1,500 positions with more than 550 teachers and other classroom staff preparing to lose their jobs. For most, their last day with the system will be June 30; others will have to leave sooner.

“There are some cases where it will be immediate and that is if they work with sensitive information, student data or financial data,” said Gorman.

If the district receives more money from the county or the state, they hope to rehire some of those they laid off.
