CHARLOTTE – Teachers in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools now have a better idea of who may not have a job next year. Tuesday night, the school board approved the process that will determine who stays and who goes.
Like previous years, performance is the main criteria used. More than 550 teachers and school personnel could be targeted.
“Teacher moral is the worst in my 35 years of teaching,” said teacher Larry Bosc.
For another year, the school board approved guidelines that determine who's eligible for a pink slip. Non-tenured teachers with low performance ratings will be the first to go, then those with licensing issues and the list continues.
“I think it's a disservice. It says nothing about did these kids learn,” said CMS Board Member Kaye McGarry.
Board members agree. The evaluation measures are not perfect but they say it's what they have to work with.
“Some of those people are good teachers, that's the difficult part,” said CMS Board member Trent Merchant.
In the past two years CMS has laid off close to 2,000 employees. With $100 million in cuts looming, the district says there's no way around adding to that total. Some teachers eliminated may have a chance to apply for other jobs in the district. Those who will not be considered for other positions will be notified by May 15.
