CHARLOTTE -- Superintendent Dr. Peter Gorman will ask the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board to approve the criteria that will be used to layoff hundreds of teachers. Gorman says the move is necessary in order to deal with an estimated $100 million budget shortfall.

Teacher layoffs were all but inevitable for the upcoming school year but Tuesday we'll get a better idea of which teachers will stay and which will be laid off.

Initial budget estimates show 600 teachers could lose their jobs for the 2011-2012 school year, meaning class sizes would get even larger and teaching assistants could be laid off as well.

Last year, the district was in a similar situation and when it began the process of laying off hundreds of teachers, the board considered a number of factors including what grade the taught and if they were considered a career employee. They also focused on performance, which many teachers have expressed concern about over the past few months. They question exactly how the district would measure their effectiveness in the classroom.

Tuesday's meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Government Center.
