CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg teaching assistants tell News 14 Carolina they were surprised to get a letter last week requiring that all be in line with the federal No Child Left Behind requirement in the coming months.

The move changes the requirement for teacher assistants in non-Title 1 schools, which are predominantly comprised of low income families. It could impact hundreds of positions across the district.

The new requirement could also affect Metro School even more since teacher assistants said they were told in recent years they were grandfathered in the current system. Now, many must scramble to complete the new requirements in a short amount of time to potentially save their job.

"I know about 10 people right now that will not get those hours. The timeline is just way too short,” an anonymous Metro School teacher assistant said.

We reached out to CMS leaders since Thursday afternoon to set up an interview on the letter to teacher assistants, but no one was made available.
