RALEIGH—An accreditation agency began its investigation into the Wake County School Board on Thursday.

AdvancED interviewed board members, school system leaders and parent groups about the dismantling of the system's diversity policy. In January the Wake County school board voted six to two to allow AdvancED to review them.

The review comes after the NAACP filed a complaint regarding the dismantling of the school system's diversity policy. Many in the community had been worried about schools losing their accreditation if the board didn't cooperate.

Board member John Tedesco agreed to move forward with the investigation.

"I am encouraging my colleagues to seize this opportunity to send a message to our accrediting services that we welcome you to Wake County, [I] look forward with pride to be fully engaged participants in your investigations," said Tedesco.

Board members had been in disagreement with the agency over whether AdvancED could investigate board policy decisions. Some board members had wanted AdvancED to comply with certain conditions regarding the investigation, but the agency rejected the conditions.

The reviews continue on Friday.
