RALEIGH -- The Wake County School Board meets again Thursday for another day of work on the student assignment plan. The board already made some changes this week that will send hundreds of students to new schools next year, but there are still more changes in the works.
One proposed change puts 75 elementary schoolers in Aversboro Elementary instead of Creech Road Elementary. School board members voted to open the new Walnut Creek Elementary School as a traditional calendar school next year and assign student there.
But board member Keith Sutton said the assignments would lead Walnut Creek to be a racially identifiable, high poverty school. "Just looking at proximity and stability, we're really just shuffling students," he said. "Until we start having a conversation about achievement in that conversation about assigning students, we'll continue to do the same thing."
Hundreds of parents and students have spoken out at five public hearings on the proposed assignment plan. Some parents asked for school assignments closer to home. Others asked the board to maintain student diversity.
Board members say they're taking into account comments from all public hearings. They're expected to vote on the new assignment plan Feb. 1.
