CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board has taken the first step toward cutting millions of dollars from next year's budget. Tuesday night, they voted on several proposals made by Superintendent Dr. Peter Gorman to save $100 million, including what to do about the Bright Beginning program.

The biggest decision the board made Tuesday was to delay voting on Bright Beginnings cuts.

But the board did approve a couple of key proposals. they voted to lengthen elementary students school day, which will affect bus schedules. That would allow the district to develop new routes, saving the district money.

About 50 people, parents, teachers, even some kids, signed up to address the board Tuesday. Many of them touted the benefits of the Bright Beginnings program and what it's meant to their family. "I please ask you to think what you are doing," said parent Aoexandra Pacheco. "I know the budget is short. Think about what you are doing to your community to your children."

At least one board member spoke out against cutting transportation for magnet school students.

The board is scheduled to take another vote Feb. 8. At that time, they could vote on the Bright Beginnings program. A final vote on all the proposals isn't scheduled until May.
