CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education will vote Tuesday on its first round of budget cuts. A number of items are up for consideration including cuts to transportation and specialized pre-K programs.

The board typically votes in the spring on all budget decisions but because of the severity of the cuts this year, Superintendent Dr. Peter Gorman presented these specific recommendations earlier in order to give affected families and staff more time to adjust.

Items up for consideration include scaling back the Bright Beginnings pre-kindergarten program from 175 classes to 70, altering bell schedules at more than 100 schools to save money on transportation and eliminating some of the extra staff positions designated to low-income students.

If the board approves all of these recommended changes as is, it will cut an estimated $62 million from the budget. On the flip side, the current plan would also eliminate more than 100 positions, and some fear the cuts will disproportionately affect low-income and minority students.

The meeting begins Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Government Center.
