RALEIGH -- The U.S. Secretary of Education has criticized the Wake County school board over its decision to end a busing for diversity program.

In a letter published in The Washington Post Friday, Secretary Arne Duncan wrote that other school districts around the country should think twice before following Wake's lead.

Duncan says it's troubling to see the diversity program come to an end in North Carolina's largest school district.

The board's decision is currently being investigated by the education department's Office for Civil Rights.

School board member John Tedesco says he's disappointed by Duncan's comments. Tedesco says Duncan might have a different opinion if he talked directly with school board members about their goals.
