CHARLOTTE – Hundreds of Harding University High School students walked out in protest Thursday over a proposal by Charlotte-Mecklenburg school leaders to close the school.

Archie and Junior Sidney Wadsworth started the protest with a small group of friends around a tree in the quad area of the school. The students lined up along the street in a non-violent protest and police were called to the scene to escort the students back to class.

"I'm really proud how we've come together to stand for what we really believe for and what our passion is," said Sabrinna Archie, a Senior at HUHS.

Emotions ran high at a community forum at the school Wednesday night. An estimated 1,100 people turned out to protest the proposal to close Harding and move Smith Language Academy into the facility.

Harding students would be sent to Philip O. Berry Academy or E.E. Waddell High School. Another community forum is scheduled for next week at Smith Academy.
