RALEIGH— Wake County School Board Chairman Ron Margiotta stuck to his decision to support stopping the busing program in schools.
He said the Board is committed to switching to neighborhood schools and told the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce its members should cooperate with the board. Margiotta said the busing program didn't help economically disadvantaged students and that many parents didn't like having their children reassigned to different schools each year.
Supporters of the diversity policy protested and officers arrested more than two dozen people for disrupting school board meetings. Also yesterday, Margiotta said he is still deciding, but is 95--percent sure he won't run for re-election next year.
