RALEIGH -- Another Wake County School Board meeting and more arrests. Raleigh police arrested six people after they refused to leave the microphone and sit down during the public comment portion of the meeting.
Afterward the school board voted to eliminate one of their action meetings each month, which leaves only one meeting a month where they listen to public comments.
"The public comment period is an essential way for you to learn how people feel about the issues you're addressing," said Heather Koons, a concerned parent. "If you cut comment period, you'll be sending the message you're not really interested in what we have to say."
But board members say they've been more than accommodating to public comments.
"We have heard every single person on the board agenda that has wanted to speak," said board member Deborah Prickett. "I think our chairman has gone over and beyond in accommodating every single citizen that has put their foot in this room."
The school board voted to lay off six people in the transportation department, eliminate a soon-to-be vacant area superintendent position and the clerk assigned to work with that superintendent. They also changed the government relations job from full-time to part-time.
They needed the cuts to help balance the budget after a reduction in state funding and to restore some funding for Project Enlightenment.
