CHARLOTTE -- Hundreds of parents from Phillip O. Berry Academy and Harding High School met Thursday night to talk about carpooling options for the upcoming school year. Because of a tight budget year, the district decided to implement shuttle stops for magnet students.

Students who ride the bus will now be picked up and dropped off at other schools, instead of directly to their magnet.

Some school officials are concerned they could lose some of their students because it will be a hassle for parents.

"This will impact students from K through 12, so even folks who say, 'oh, well they can ride public transportation,' you're not going to put your middle-schooler or your elementary student on a public transportation," said Ericka Ellis-Stewart, who is part of the Harding School Leadership Team.

Before implementing shuttle stops, it cost around $1,100 more to transport a magnet student versus one attending a neighborhood school.
