RALEIGH -- Wake County school board member Keith Sutton is seeking an apology from the police officer who tried to arrest him when protesters disrupted Tuesday's board meeting.

Sutton says he went into the crowd of protesters at the school board meeting in hopes of calming them down. He says he was also trying to encourage police officers in the meeting room not to use strong force.

One of the officers detained Sutton, and Sutton says that officer should apologize to him.

“I think an apology would be appropriate,” Sutton said. “If that happens or does not happen, that’s certainly not a deal breaker for me, but I do think an apology would be appropriate.”

Raleigh Police Chief Harry Dolan released a statement Wednesday evening. It reads:

"The officers involved yesterday exhibited great restraint and professionalism throughout the events of the day. While I understand these are challenging times for the members of the board, I must insist that they not physically place themselves among demonstrators who are being actively engaged by officers taking police action.”

Sixteen people were arrested at the meeting.
