RALEIGH – Wake County commissioners passed a resolution expressing their concern over any attempt to resegregate Wake County public schools.
That's what some groups say will happen if the school board proceeds with its plans to end the school system's diversity policy in favor of community schools.
"You don't change everything overnight when you have a nationally recognized system," Commissioner Betty Lou Ward said.
County commissioners narrowly passed the resolution 4-3. It implies the end of the student diversity policy will create some high poverty schools with low academic performance and lead to overcrowding in more prosperous areas of the county.
The measure faced opposition from some commissioners.
"It's inflammatory and presupposing things that haven't happened," Commissioner Joe Bryan said.
County commissioners don't have any authority over the school board. The only thing they control is funding.
"Sure, we could give less money, but who are we going to hurt? The kids? That'd be crazy," Commissioner Stan Norwalk said.
But the resolution shows the majority of commissioners want the school board to keep the diversity policy in place.
