CAMP LEJEUNE -- On Jan. 28 the new visitor's center and main gate will open aboard Camp Lejeune. This will improve access for visitors and security for the base.

The new main gate access control complex is a $5 million project that has significant upgrades compared to the current facilities. The new visitor's center is twice as large as the old one and has 80 parking spaces. At the new complex, people will also be able to register their vehicles for a Department of Defense pass, a service not offered at the old visitor's center.

Commuters will likely see no difference in traffic because the new main gate will still see the same volume of vehicles but base commander Col. Daniel Lecce says the improvements for visitors will be huge.

"I have 10,000 family members that live on the base so it's a community within a community and we have to understand that," said Lecce. "Customer service, making things as easy as you can, understanding that you have to have security is our goal and I think this goal goes a long way in achieving that goal."

The old visitor's center will eventually be turned into an access point for contractors coming aboard the base.
