A year after widespread worries that thousands of teachers would face layoffs from state budget cuts, North Carolina schools are holding their own for the 2012-2013 academic year.

School administrators say they've avoided job losses after four years of cuts.

Since 2008, nearly 6,200 public school employees in North Carolina lost their jobs, including almost 2,200 teachers.

This year, some districts are hiring more teachers to cover growing student enrollment. Others have cut teacher pay and some have replaced state and federal funds with more local tax money.
