CARY, N.C. – A gym in Cary now dons the name of former N.C. State University women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who died in January after a long battle with breast cancer.
Doctors first diagnosed her in 1987, and a year later, she coached an Olympic gold medal winning team.
Cary town officials cut the ribbon on the new Coach Kay Yow Court Saturday. Along with a dedication ceremony at the Herbert C. Young Community Center, organizers also held a basketball clinic.
Members of Yow's staff, former players and one former assistant coach were all on hand to lead the lessons in shooting, sharing and scoring, and to witness the community come together to remember the pivotal leader in women's sports.
“I think she was really proud and just humbled by the gesture,” Assistant Coach Jenny Palmateer said. “Coaching wasn't just about wins and losses for her. She really used coaching as a tool and used it to help build life-long relationships.”
“In December of 2008, the town council decided to name this gymnasium floor after Kay Yow to honor her,” coordinator Joy Ennis said. “She was a long-time Cary resident, and she was our official tree lighter.”
In addition to leading in women's sports, Yow was also a leader in the fight against breast cancer. To learn more, visit the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund Web site.
