FAYETTEVILLE – A Fort Bragg helicopter pilot has been honored for his bravery during a 2010 mission in Afghanistan.

Maj. Brendan Murphy was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross at a ceremony Monday. It's the oldest military aviation award, and it honors heroic actions.

His commanders said Maj. Murphy made several trips under-fire and in bad weather to resupply troops, and then fly them out.

"It was horrible weather. we knew that they were under heavy, sustained fire and they were running short of ammo,” said Lt. Gen. Frank Helmeck, commanding general, XVIII Airborne Corps. “Their mortars – they didn't have their base plate, so they needed help and they had some causalities that they had to get out. so we were going to try whatever we could to get in there to them."

Lt. Gen. Helmick said Murphy's actions that day helped save more than 100 lives.
