CHARLOTTE--The Humane Society of Charlotte is caring for nearly 60 dogs seized in Brunswick and New Hanover counties.

Deputies found more than 100 dogs at a home in Leland and another 30 in Wilmington.

The homeowners were charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty.

Humane society workers say the dogs were kept in deplorable conditions and many showed signs of physical distress.

More than 50 of the dogs are in Charlotte and some may be available for adoption as early as next week.

Meanwhile, the humane society needs donations of cash and supplies and families willing to foster the animals.

For emergency needs, the Humane Society of Charlotte is accepting monetary donations and supplies to assist with fostering the puppies and dogs. Need items include: gently used towels, puppy pads, canned dog food, Esbilac, puppy food (for nursing mother dogs) and Ziploc gallon sized freezer bags (for food storage). These items can be dropped off at their 2700 Toomey Avenue shelter in Charlotte. The office is open from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the weekends.
