WILMINGTON--Former state Sen. R.C. Soles is recuperating after undergoing open heart surgery Friday morning.

A spokesperson from his law office said Soles he went through the surgery fine. He was admitted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after learning he had two blockages. Soles remains in critical condition.

The former state senator represented the 8th District from 1977 until 2009.
