The National Retail Federation estimates Americans could spend more than $17 billion celebrating Valentines Day this year and while many people will receive chocolates and roses many more will likely get Valentine's Day cards.

There are eight mobile field hospitals in North Carolina. Officials said the hospitals mean North Carolina is better prepared than most states. Hospital officials say it is that readiness that can have the best impact on a worse case scenario. More than 400 medical professionals from across the country are expected to attend the two-day symposium.

The last seven months have been a great time to be part of the Temple of Israel in Wilmington. Part of the excitement is due to Rabbi Paul Sidlofsky's arrival in Wilmington in July. He is the 18th rabbi installed in the congregation's history.

Congressman Mike McIntyre is reportedly running for re-election for his seat in Congress. McIntyre had considered a run for governor after Gov. Bev Perdue said she would not seek re-election. A Public Policy Polling poll had McIntyre facing an uphill battle for the Governor's Mansion if he ran for the Democratic nomination.

Former state Sen. R.C. Soles is recuperating after undergoing open heart surgery Friday morning. A spokesperson from his law office said Soles he went through the surgery fine. He was admitted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after learning he had two blockages.

The situation involving a bomb threat at a Wilmington nursing home is over. Therefore the lockdown of two nearby schools has been lifted. Deputies were called to Liberty Commons Retirement Home earlier Friday for the bomb threat. Authorities searched the building and found nothing. A public meeting on a proposed widening project for Highway 87 in Columbus County and Bladen County was held in Riegelwood Thursday night. It's not known yet when a decision on the project will be made.

Carteret General Hospital is the first facility in eastern North Carolina to use robotic arm technology in partial knee and total hip replacement. The hospital began using RIO, the robotic arm, in January for Makoplasty procedures. Doctors say the new technology reduces post-operation pain, helps patients recover quicker and is more precise.

New numbers show positive signs for state ports in Wilmington and Morehead City. The Star News reports an 11 percent increase in the number of containers taken in at the two ports and an 8 percent increase in bulk cargo.

The 2012 Wilmington Azalea Festival begins April 11, during a press conference Wednesday, festival organizers announced their 2012 Queen. Miss America 2004 Ericka Dunlap has been crowned as this year's Azalea Festival Queen. Dunlap was the first and only African-American to be crowned Miss Florida in the state's pageant history.

Some local legends learned Wednesday that they will soon be a part of the greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame. This year's inductees include Trot Nixon, a 12 year-veteran of major league baseball who won a World Series before he retired in 2007. Nixon currently serves as a sports reporter in Wilmington.

From a closed public school, to a possible charter, back to a public school with some changes. That's the story of the former D.C. Virgo Middle School in New Hanover County. Tuesday night the school board approved plans to re-open the school next year. It will still be a public school but some direction will come from an advisory board made up of community members and area non-profits.

Department of Defense officials said Fleet Readiness Center-East is still on track to perform the repair and maintenance work on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones, Gov. Bev Perdue and other government officials sent a letter to Washington in November explaining the importance of the depot.
