CHARLOTTE – A new group is again making push for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to be decentralized and broken up into smaller, stand-alone districts.
Parents have begun a petition drive in the hopes the measure could get momentum for state lawmakers to consider.
The group has spent months researching and writing a proposal that would create three separate districts with smaller school boards and superintendents in each.
Supporters believe with more than 170 schools spread out across 500 square miles, the district is far too big, too expensive, and not responsive enough to student and parent needs.
“The most important thing that we are looking at is the cost effectiveness, reducing costs in the school system and bringing the management closer to the community,” said Tom Davis, CMS decentralization supporter.
News 14 Carolina asked CMS officials and the school board chairman for their opinion on the proposal Thursday, but they declined comment.
