From launching homemade rockets to making towers entirely out of pasta, the roughly 900 students, making up 59 teams from across the region, will be participating in the competition. It utilizes their skills in the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and math.

Security is expected to be tight Saturday night as Speed Street wraps up in uptown Charlotte. Last year, violence erupted two or three hours after the event ended. Police say fights broke out and someone pulled a gun and started shooting near the Hilton Hotel on Third Street.

The 20-year-old woman was walking to her car around 10:30 p.m. Friday after leaving the Dollar Tree on University City Boulevard when a man walked up to her in the parking lot and demanded the night deposit. When she said she didn't have it, he fired and she was grazed by a bullet.

Under a late spring sun, tears of joy and tears of sadness were a constant Friday evening during a Relay for Life event in Charlotte. The American Cancer Society's main fundraising event started a new chapter, holding its first event at the Ballantyne Morrison YMCA location.

Dr. Heath Morrison, the new superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, unveiled what he called his entry plan Friday morning. In the 14-page document, Morrison sets out his goals and pre-entry and entry actions for each of those items.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame is working to capitalize on the thousands of race fans in town for the Coca-Cola 600 by offering a shuttle back and forth to uptown from Charlotte Motor Speedway. It's a convenience for those who don't want to sit in traffic, especially those from out of town.

Three lanes of Interstate 85 southbound were reopened after downed power lines closed the entire roadway for a short time Friday afternoon near Freedom Drive. All but the far right lane are now open to traffic. There's no word on the cause of the fallen power lines.

Millions of Americans are hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend. AAA of the Carolinas estimates 1 million people across North Carolina are expected to travel this holiday and 88 percent of them will drive. They also say falling gas prices are putting more people behind the wheel.

A former Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting six women while on duty is being released from prison Friday. Marcus Jackson was sentenced to two years behind bars in 2010. He'll have to register as a sex offender.

The fires broke out around 3:30 a.m. Friday at the Azalea Hills mobile home park off Andrew Circle. Investigators are calling the fires suspicious, but they have not said whether or not the fires were intentionally set.

Protestors will be allowed to demonstrate against a preacher's controversial sermon against gay people. The protestors plan to speak out on Sunday against Pastor Charles Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden who said that gay people shold be rounded up and left to die in concentration style camps.

Dozens of people spoke their mind this evening at a public hearing for the proposed Mecklenburg County budget. The proposed $1.41-billion budget would lower the county property tax rate to its lowest level in eight years and add funding for Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools, parks and libraries. But despite that, not everyone is happy.

More than two dozen alleged members of the United Blood Nation gang were arrested earlier this month in Gaston, Cleveland and Lincoln counties. The U.S. Attorney's Office says the roundup will have a significant impact on the organizational structure of the gang, nationally, from leadership down to street level.
