SPRING LAKE — A soldier killed in action was brought home to his hometown of Spring Lake Thursday.

Spc. Trevor Adkins was killed earlier in July in Afghanistan. Adkins was recently posthumously promoted from Private First Class. Spc. Adkins was one of six soldiers killed by an IED explosion. This was Adkins first combat deployment since joining the military in August of 2010. Adkins was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, but grew up in Spring Lake.

His family was thankful to have his remains brought home.

"As a mother I am very proud to be here to welcome my son home to North Carolina where he belongs,” said Carolyn Haines, mother of Spc. Adkins.

"A home town boy comes home, it's sad, it's bitter sweet, but it's a community that is here to welcome him back home,” said Ride Captain with the Patriot Guard Riders Bill Amerson.

Spc. Adkins' aunt, who is also enlisted in the military, was the personal escort of the body from Dover to Pope Field, bringing the family extra comfort knowing he was with a loved one on his trip home.

"That was very special to me to be able to have a family member there to protect his body as he comes home to North Carolina, so we can prepare him to be buried,” said Haines.

Adkins' body was then escorted from Pope to Adcock funeral home in Spring Lake by the Patriot Guard Riders. Funeral services for Spc. Adkins will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake
