SHELBY--The Cleveland County man charged with killing his stepfather and stabbing his mother is scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday.

The sheriff's office says 21-year-old Matthew Safrit shot his stepfather, 41-year-old Scott Cloninger several times in an argument over a car.

The shooting happened at a mobile home on Sam Lattimore Road, near Wesson Road, but this was not the family's residence.

Safrit was bitten by a K9 officer when he ran away and was treated at the hospital.

He is charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injuries and assaulting a K9.
