GREENSBORO, N.C.--Stephanie George and her husband Timothy thought they heard a cat wailing outside their home on O'Ferrell Street in Greensboro Monday night, but it was much more than that.

"It wasn't a cat noise," Timothy George said. "Come to find out that it was a baby, laying behind my neighbor's house."

Police described the baby boy as black or hispanic and was most likely born just hours before being abandoned on a back porch, where police said he sat in the sun for hours.

"He was so red," Stephanie George said.

"The child had blood on the blanket," Timothy George said. "It was exasperated. Looked like it was red from the heat. Didn't know what to do. Flies were all over the child."

The baby boy is listed in good condition at the hospital, but under these conditions it could have been a very different outcome. Police said that's why North Carolina has safe haven laws.

"The mother could've actually surrendered the child to any responsible adult, or any organization, such as DSS, police department, fire department, EMS, any hospital," Sgt. Chad Williams said.

Parents can anonymously leave an infant seven days or younger at a safe haven center without being questioned or prosecuted for abandonment.

"I'm just glad we found the baby and he's okay," Stephanie George said. "That's all that matters to me right now."
