CHARLOTTE -- The cell phone parking lot at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport will move during the convention. That's just one of the changes airport officials are making due to the increased volume of traffic.

The lot will move to 55-35 Wilkinson Boulevard near business valet. Drivers will be able to access the lot from Harlee Avenue. It will be closed Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2.

The airport will also separate vehicles, not by arrivals or departures, but by commercial or personal.

Airport director Jerry Orr admits there aren't enough lanes at this airport, but not something he can change overnight. So they will change the traffic patterns to try to accommodate the influx of traffic. Orr says they expect Friday to be the busiest day because so many people will be leaving all at once, compared to trickling in over three days.

He also talked about security. Orr said TSA will have more employees and they will have all 20 security lanes open and operating during those peak times the week of the convention.

Although there haven't been any direct threats to the airport, the director says they have to be ready for just about anything.

“Certainly it could. You have to assume everything is on the table all the time," said Orr. "It's maybe difficult to defend against it but you can't say they're not going to do that.”

Orr added they will have 350 to 400 cabs working that week. He says they consulted with officials from Denver, Colo., the previous host city, and they have capability to call in extra cabs if needed.
