CHARLOTTE – The Democratic National Convention is two weeks away and the physical signs are starting to appear in and around uptown Charlotte. Construction crews, business owners and emergency personnel are feverishly putting finishing touches on preparations.

Eckel Sousa, the project supervisor of the American Presidential Experience, a mobile museum of all things commander-in-chief, says he and his crew are not feeling the stress despite being so close to their deadline.

“We are good,” he said, confident they'll conclude long before the convention begins.

The American Presidential Experience will feature more than 35 displays, a replica of the Oval Office and fuselage of Air Force One. The experience will be open to the public during the DNC events.

Construction is ongoing in other parts of the city as well. A type of tent city, full of scaffolding and florescent cones has popped-up near the arena. Signs welcoming DNC visitors are also starting to show up.

Stephanie Auville, of Extravaganza Events and Props, hopes the signs drum up business.

“I think you will see a lot of stuff pop up the week of, not only physical tangible stuff but also businesses and stuff,” she said.

While some things are being built, other things will start to disappear. Law enforcement and government security officials will remove a number of mailboxes in uptown and sealing mail chutes for security purposes.

The DNC will be in Charlotte from Sept. 4-6 with Carolina Fest leading things off on Labor Day.
