DANBURY, N.C. -- A Stokes County couple will face charges after officials raid a puppy mill at their home. Willis and Lucile Mabe could face misdemeanor or felony animal cruelty charges.
Complaints led police to the Danbury home where they found more than 160 dogs living in what officials call deplorable conditions.
Law enforcement and animal rescue agencies spent more than seven hours cleaning out the home. They say the couple was breeding the dogs to make money.
"Unscrupulous breeders or puppy mills are breeding just for the profit," said Kim Alboum with the Humane Society of the U.S. "This is not responsible breeding. Responsible breeders would never keep the animals in the condition that these animals have lived in."
The dogs will go to partner agencies with the Humane Society. Investigators are waiting for a veterinarian's report before deciding on charges.
