CHARLOTTE -- U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick said Tuesday she will retire from Congress.
In a statement posted on YouTube , Myrick said it was time for her to step down.
"I’m grateful for the privilege of serving you," she said. "We have all been blessed by staff members who truly care and delight in helping to solve problems for everyone in the district."
Myrick has been the 9th District representative since 1995. She served two terms as mayor of Charlotte prior to serving in Congress.
She is the third member of North Carolina congressional delegation to announce their retirement. Rep. Brad Miller and Heath Shuler said they won't seek re-election.
Mecklenburg County Commissioner Jim Pendergraph said he is going to enter the race and will hold an announcement Wednesday. Pendergraph, a Republican, is a former sheriff of Mecklenburg County.
Pendergraph joins Republicans Mike Steinberg of Matthews and Michael Shaffer of Charlotte.
Other candidates said to be considering running are Mecklenburg Commissioner, Jennifer Robert, a Democrat, and Charlotte City Council member Andy Dulin.
