RALEIGH — The deadline for people to get in their taxes is quickly approaching. This year the deadline is April 18.
Workers at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, sites across the state will prepare taxes for those making under $49,000 a year for free. All the tax preparers at VITA sites are IRS trained and certified.
Tax preparers say participants should bring a social security card for everyone on the return, a photo ID, and all tax documents such as W-2s, 1099s and interest statements. They also said it is helpful to bring last year's return.
"Not because it's required but because if there is a big difference between this year and last year, it's good to be able to refer back and see, maybe there was an error last year, or maybe there is an error this year," said Cara Williams, Durham VITA Coordinator.
Williams said this year taxpayers should be aware of some upcoming changes. She says those getting the $400 "Make Work Pay" credit will not see the credit the following year.
"They actually reduced the Social Security tax by 2 percent so each paycheck is maybe a few dollars more," said Williams. "That's where that $400 is going."
Some VITA sites require an appointment, so it is best to call ahead.
