DURHAM COUNTY -- A brush fire scorched between 25 and 30 acres of public land in southern Durham County on Tuesday afternoon. That's according to fire crews who responded to the fire on a plot of land owned by the Durham Public School system off Scott King Road.

The brush fire sent flames shooting 30 feet into the air while 35 firefighters with 12 trucks fought to put it out. Fire officials were not only concerned the combination of dry weather and a light wind could threaten nearby homes but they were also monitoring a power substation located on the edge of the blaze.

"We actually did have a Duke power substation that was of concerned about being evolved from the fire,” said Mark Holland, Division Chief of the Parkwood Fire Department. “We actually were again able to place fire units around the power station and it was never actually threatened."

The fire was fully contained around 5 p.m. The cause has not been identified and investigation is ongoing.
