WINSTON-SALEM -- The Junior League of Winston-Salem's 56th annual rummage sale got underway Friday.

The two-day sale at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum annex and education buildings includes thousands of items, from clothing to electronics to antiques.

Hundreds of bargain hunters rushed through the doors looking for that something special at a good price.

“I got a painting for my room ‘cause it matches perfectly, so, yeah, and I like the saying on it,” said Kelsey Fields.

“I got a gold wreath that I looked at last night,” said Floyd Creech. “I came back and got it.”

Some went home with that not-so-special something.

“A blackboard that my husband’s gonna hate and a wicker basket like I need another one,” said Kimberly Davis.

One shopper has made the rummage sale an annual tradition since it began nearly six decades ago.

“I’m a retired school teacher and I used to come to try to find clothing so I could carry it back to the children,” said Julia Johnson.

League President Leah Crowley thought the big draw was the excitement of the unknown.

“The possibility that there might be some treasure here that they’ll find,” said Crowley. “A lot of families find that this is where they can shop for the entire year for clothes and household goods and get a great deal on it, so, the excitement really is about taking advantage of this opportunity.”

The rummage sale is the organization's largest fundraiser of the year and it supports the organization’s core mission.

“Our focus is on developing the potential of women, promoting volunteerism and ultimately improving the community,” said Crowley.

The sale continues Saturday with a half price sale from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Admission is $3.

The event winds up Saturday afternoon with the "big bag sale" from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Admission is $1.
