PINEHURST, N.C. – Charlotte business leaders were motivated by a billionaire during the Chamber of Commerce's annual retreat in Pinehurst this week.
David Murdock, founder of the N.C. Research Campus, kicked off the retreat with words of economic inspiration.
"There is nothing that you cannot do if you can visualize it and if you can do it," Murdock said.
He also predicted that in the next 12 months, the economy in the U.S. would change drastically.
His words were in line with the Chamber's theme to recharge Charlotte. People attending the retreat make up the list of Charlotte's major players, from big corporations to nonprofit, government and small businesses.
Mayoral candidates Anthony Foxx and John Lassiter later took questions from the crowd, who asked what separates the two from each other.
"I have a record of making things happen," Lassiter said.
"I'm going the 'I' out of the mayor's position," Foxx said. "This is a 'we' time."
Both candidates admit the mayor has to use all pieces of the puzzle – each group represented at the retreat – to make the city successful.
"We've got to have leadership that understands how all these various pieces roll up to the whole and we've got to have a mayor who's credibly working across our community to build those relationships and move our community forward," Foxx said.
"I want a community where those of us in this room, those of us in our neighborhood, those of us that we work with, see this as the kind of place that they can take some risk and the platform is here for success," Lassiter said.
The candidates said they both have three top priorities. For Lassiter, it's jobs, getting repeat offenders off the streets and lowering taxes while keeping a high level of service. Foxx also focused on supporting businesses to create jobs and safe communities. He also talked about building relationships in Raleigh and Washington to help Charlotte grow.
