RALEIGH -- Gov. Bev Perdue got her hands dirty in the executive mansion's garden Friday morning to plant some greens for the hungry.

The national Plant a Row campaign runs though the end of the month and encourages gardeners to grow extra produce for those in need. The governor helped plant a row of collard greens to show her support.

"Today we're asking everybody who's out there planting a fall garden to do the same thing all over North Carolina,” Perdue said. “There's a way to get those extra rows of crops to be delivered to the folks who need it."

The Interfaith Food Shuttle heads up the campaign and works with more than 200 partner agencies. Last year, it distributed about six million pounds of food to the hungry.
